Sterling Stuff
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
04/11/2002 - 12/12/2002
Variety is indeed the spice of life and who would have imagined that a brief seemingly so restrictive could result in such an explosion of creative diversity?
Our invitation to fifty contemporary sculptors, to produce a piece for silver under 15cms, presented a challenge to more than a few but for us it has been a very exciting adventure. Christmas came early here as parcels arrived from across the globe bearing the most surprising and wonderful contents: tiny modelled waxes, intricately carved stones, found objects, sometimes smelly, crushed paper balls, meticulously detailed pieces and bold abstractions.
‘Bones to Bronze’ Extinct Species of the Mascarene Islands
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
08/03/2004 - 16/04/2026
Shivers must surely go up the spine of anyone who visits this exhibition, for the eleven bronze sculptures all represent creatures that have vanished from the face of earth. There is something unnerving about the fact that they are gone forever, driven out of existence by the carelessness and greed of mankind. The reconstructions take up very little space, yet they have positively global significance, since they represent the latest initiative in an ambitious and imaginative campaign to slow down the tide that is sweeping thousands of species towards extinction.
Pinstripes and Polka Dots
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
21/06/2004 - 23/07/2004
Animal Signals by Jonathan Kingdon.
Renowned both as an artist and a scientist, Jonathan Kingdon is exceptional in combining these two disciplines so deftly. An inventive mind and a deep understanding of evolution allied with acute observation expressed through exquisite and powerful draughtsmanship set him apart.
This exhibition is merely a window onto the vast landscape in which Jonathan roams and focuses on his graphic explorations of animal signals through drawing, painting, print and sculpture.
Body Language
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
11/04/2005 - 20/05/2005
Twenty sculptors working in bronze and sterling silver.
Body Language’ explores the enormous depth and variety of approach to the human form in contemporary sculpture and celebrates the resurgence of artistic interest in this most primal of images.
Twenty well-known sculptors working in bronze and sterling silver have been invited by the gallery to take part in the exhibition which emphasises the versatility of casting techniques and the ingenious use of traditional media.
Odd Birds and Other Selves
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
07/11/2005 - 21/12/2005
‘In his latest works Buck has continued the move away from the ‘super-realism’ of his early career that culminated in pieces of astonishing serenity and magical presence at the turn of the millennium in the Intimate Connections series. The keynote of the latter work was a reduction of formal complexity, such that the thing in the world to which each piece referred could be named, but from which detail and all visually distracting excrescence had been expunged.
All Female Case – eight invited artists
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
06/11/2006 - 15/12/2006
The stage is Pangolin Gallery and Foundry. Eight female artists are the players. They are supported by the founder and his staff, who engage with the artists at all stages of rendering their sculptures into bronze, and are ready to consult, advise and experiment.

Prologue
The imperative that all bronze cast sculptures have in common is that their forms are created in another material first, and artists have to take into account everything that might happen during the transformation from clay, wood, mixed media, plastic – the list goes on – into bronze.
Michael Cooper Bronzes
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
02/04/2007 - 11/05/2007
His first solo show at Gallery Pangolin.
Michael Cooper’s work brings the third dimension vividly to life through the irresistible urge to feel and caress surface and form. With eyes closed, this abstract, almost musical pleasure is an essential part of the appreciation of his sculptures. This is not ‘Nature, red in tooth and claw’, nor sanitised sentimentality; Cooper’s sculptures are dignified, self-assured, independent and respectful.
The timeless quest for intrinsic beauty is his purpose; an empathy for natural or human forms, his muse.
Lynn Chadwick Prints and Maquettes
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
11/06/2007 - 20/07/2007
It feels strange to be putting together an exhibition of Lynn Chadwick’s work without his input. Four years have passed since his death and it seems appropriate now to reassess his legacy through the intimacy of his maquettes and prints. In these smaller sculptures and graphic works all Chadwick’s great themes are visited. The small scale of the maquettes belies their monumental impact; they are at once precious yet monumental, catching the attention from afar.
Anthony Abrahams : Maquettes and Drawings
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin and Museum in the Park, Stroud
14/01/2008 - 22/02/2008
This is a long overdue exhibition and one which celebrates Anthony’s zestful approach and adventurous outlook.
His emblematic figures exude character through their poised and serene body language; caught in playful postures, they remind us of ourselves and of those familiar to us.
The exhibition includes sculpture, prints and drawings, reflecting Anthony’s lively curiosity and his fabulous dexterity. It spectacularly demonstrates his accomplishment in both two and three dimensions.
From Aardvark to Zebra
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
19/05/2008 - 27/06/2008
Our exhibition is a major retrospective survey of Anita Mandl’s work including rare early pieces in lignum vitae, carvings in polyphant and marble, and many works in bronze.
Mandl began sculpting more than forty years ago. She trained as a zoologist and studied sculpture at Birmingham College of Art. She exhibits extensively throughout the British Isles and is a Royal West of England Academician and a Fellow of The Royal Society of British Sculptors.
Revitalism
03/11/2008 - 12/12/2008
British sculpture and works on paper from the 1950’s and 1960’s.
The group of post war British sculptors who came to prominence through the sheer vitality and power of their sculpture is once again the subject of our exhibition. Sculpture of the 1950’s and 60’s is currently enjoying a renaissance and books films and exhibitions are rediscovering for a new audience just how good these artists actually are, with auction houses regularly achieving record prices for their work.
Fire and Brimstone
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
15/06/2009 - 24/07/2009
12 artists exploring the drama and sensuality of the casting process.
Over the 6000 year history of bronze casting, mankind has become so technically proficient that the creative possibilities of the process are often overlooked. The ambition driving precise, ever-better accuracy of reproduction and the constant constraints of cost have largely kept cast metal sculpture as a traditional form of art. Not even the Arts and Crafts movement or the varied groups within Modernism with their ‘truth to materials’ ethos, strayed far from the traditional role for bronze casting.
Out of the Shadows
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
19/09/2009 - 14/11/2009
Unseen sculpture of the 1960’s by Lynn Chadwick.
Lynn Chadwick hardly needs an introduction. He is the pre-eminent sculptor of his generation present in every major collection of Post War art. Yet there exists a group of highly original and barely seen sculptures that shed a completely new light on his oeuvre.
The constructivist and abstract works Lynn Chadwick produced between 1963 and 1966 have largely escaped critical notice or exposition but are an essential element in any analysis of Chadwick’s unique approach to making sculpture.
Stirred for a Bird
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
07/06/2010 - 23/07/2010
Celebrating the bird through sculpture, prints and drawings.
Representations of the soul, potent symbols of war or emblems of peace, messengers of the Gods and intercessors between Man and the spirit world, birds can be expressions of ‘otherness’ yet are our everyday companions and markers of the seasons. Robins are the gardener’s companion, the song of the cuckoo heralds the spring, city pigeons are ever-present though barely noticed and the gathering of swallows on telephone wires signals the end of summer.
Crucible 2010
Project at Gloucester Cathedral
01/09/2010 - 07/11/2010
When the Dean invited us to curate an exhibition of contemporary sculpture in Gloucester Cathedral, we knew such a magnificent setting with its wealth of art and craftsmanship would undeniably be the centrepiece of the show. How then to avoid being overwhelmed by this awe-inspiring and historical space? We made the decision that to be successful we would have to aim as high as possible and choose objects that demanded attention, questioned convention and stimulated ideas.
Figuring It Out
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
25/10/2010 - 26/06/2026
Four artists exploring the human form.
The human form has been a major preoccupation of artists/makers from all periods and cultures from the very dawn of object-making and indeed, the earliest known sculpture is the ‘Venus of Hohle Fels’, a 35,000 year-old ivory carving found in Germany. It seems appropriate therefore that we should make this the theme of our exhibition. For each of our four artists, the figure has been a constant source of inspiration and one to which they have returned time after time.
Strange Beasts
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
06/06/2011 - 15/07/2011
Lynn Chadwick and the New Generation
For the first time in our twenty-year history we invited a guest curator to collaborate with us, Jerwood Award-winner Lorraine Robbins, who now combines her own fine art practice with teaching Art and Design at Stroud College.
2011 saw the sixtieth anniversary of the Festival of Britain for which the then relatively unknown sculptor Lynn Chadwick was commissioned to make two major works. It therefore seemed fitting that we commissioned six young artists to produce new works in response to and inspired by a Chadwick sculpture of their choice.
Making a Point: The Point of Making
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
31/10/2011 - 17/12/2011
‘Making a Point: The Point of Making’ explores the evolution of Jon Buck’s sculptural language and philosophy over three decades. Highlights include: a rare narrative, painted-resin head from 1983; sensitive and touching ‘embrace’ pieces from the 1990’s; powerful and symbolic works from the ‘Intimate Connections’ series of 2000; brightly-coloured birds and beasts from ‘Odd Birds and Other Selves’, 2005; stunning painted bronzes from ‘Behind the Lines’ shown at Pangolin London in 2009 and three exciting new pieces made especially for the exhibition.
Corpus
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
21/05/2012 - 29/06/2012
Sue Freeborough
Freeborough’s wry comments on the human condition are supported by a thoughtful and intellectual approach to her work and an interest in scientific research. Many of her sculptures use classical imagery as a starting point from which to make contemporary statements.
‘The human body is central to my work, whether in form or suggestion. The sculptures are constructions, made from varying materials that best suit my ideas. These are based around the mind/body, drawing parallels between the uncertainty of how a person is perceived from outward appearances, and how ideas are perceived when transformed into sculpture.

Part of SITE Festival 2013
Cast in a Different Light
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
17/06/2013 - 19/07/2013
George Fullard and John Hoskin
Sculpture, prints, paintings and drawings from the 1950’s and 60’s by these two important yet often overlooked artists. The accompanying catalogue includes an introduction by curator and writer Gillian Whiteley and personal recollections of the artists by Steve Hurst and Ken Cook.
‘At first glance, the artists featured in Cast in a Different Light have a good deal in common. Born in the early 1920s, they were both on active war service (Fullard in North Africa and Italy, Hoskin in Germany) and went on to make sculpture the focus of their creative practice.
Mammals of Africa – Jonathan Kingdon
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
09/09/2013 - 27/09/2013
Gallery Pangolin is proud to host this exhibition of Jonathan Kingdon’s drawings, prints and sculpture which marks the publication earlier this year of ‘Mammals of Africa’, a series of six volumes describing in detail every currently recognized species of African land mammal.

Charlotte Mayer : In Essence
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
14/10/2013 - 22/11/2013
The first major review of the artist’s work, this important show traces the development of Mayer’s themes and preoccupations and includes work from 1972 up to the present. Now in her eighties, Mayer is as passionate as ever about her craft and continues to produce sculptures of great eloquence, grace and subtlety which have the depth and power to reach us all.
A new 112-page hardback book accompanies the exhibition with over 100 colour illustrations and text by author and art historian Tom Flynn.
Jon Buck: Without Words
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
09/06/2014 - 18/07/2014
Everyone Sang
Everyone suddenly burst out singing;
And I was filled with such delight
As prisoned birds must find in freedom,
Winging wildly across the white
Orchards and dark-green fields; on–on–and out of sight.
Everyone’s voice was suddenly lifted;
And beauty came like the setting sun:
My heart was shaken with tears; and horror
Drifted away . . . O, but Everyone
Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.
Lynn Chadwick: the Maker’s Studio
Project at Museum in the Park, Stroud
14/06/2014 - 13/07/2014
Internationally renowned artist Lynn Chadwick (1914 – 2003) lived and worked for much of his adult life in Gloucestershire. To mark his centenary and for the first time ever, Gallery Pangolin has recreated the artist’s studio at the Museum in the Park. This unique exhibition offers visitors a fascinating insight into Chadwick’s working practice.
‘We hope to be able to suggest Lynn has just popped out for lunch and might be back at any minute’
Rungwe Kingdon, Director of Pangolin Editions.

Terence Coventry: Recent Sculpture and Works on Paper
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
15/06/2015 - 24/07/2015
One of the gallery’s most popular and best-selling artists, this is Terence Coventry’s fourth solo show at Gallery Pangolin.
A full-time sculptor for many years, Coventry no longer feels the need to take an animal or bird as his starting point and instead takes inspiration from arrangements of pure form which he then works into his chosen subject. His passionate connection to birds and animals remains nonetheless, and the way in which he deftly transforms an assemblage of shapes into a familiar beast or body is all part of the magic of his work.
Lynn Chadwick draughtsman
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
26/09/2015 - 06/11/2015
Lynn Chadwick was, in the true sense, a natural draughtsman.
His drawings give us an intimate and wonderful insight into his making practice. Famously private, Chadwick rarely allowed anyone into the studio during work time. However, in these distinctive and exceptional images, his method and process are clearly discernible. His deft lines and the directness of the image-making reveal a fresh view of his sculpture. Seldom shown in their own right, the drawings we have brought together for this exhibition add new depth to his oeuvre and illustrate further the diversity of his unique language.
Nature of the Beast
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
18/04/2016 - 27/05/2016
Throughout the ages, Man has used images of the beast as a means of understanding himself and even today in the 21st century, animals continue to be an important vehicle for artists of many different backgrounds. Our exhibition is a powerful demonstration of this relationship and celebrates the diversity of expression alive in contemporary art.
Artists: Nick Bibby, Christie Brown, Ralph Brown, Jon Buck, Lynn Chadwick, Michael Cooper, Terence Coventry, Steve Dilworth, Damien Hirst, Marcus James, Jonathan Kingdon, Bryan Kneale, Anita Mandl, Eduardo Paolozzi, Lorraine Robbins, Steve Russell and Deborah van der Beek.
Jubilee
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
13/06/2016 - 19/08/2016
It is hard to believe that twenty-five years have passed since Gallery Pangolin made its entry onto the art scene with a modest stand at the 1991 Bath Art Fair. With a group show titled ‘Bronze Sculptures’ and its accompanying catalogue, the new gallery opened its doors in early 1992.
Many memorable landmarks have followed and the gallery itself has been gradually updated from a former window showroom to the current light and airy contemporary space which makes the most of our outlook on the river.
George Fullard : Sculpture and Survival
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
07/11/2016 - 16/12/2016
Although publicly and critically acclaimed during the golden age of Post-War British sculpture in the late 1950’s and ’60’s, following his early death in 1973 George Fullard’s work slipped into relative obscurity. The recent surge in interest in this period has seen a growing regard for his work and our exhibition is a timely opportunity to re-assess and acknowledge this intriguing and underrated artist. The show includes many previously unseen works and brings together bronzes, assemblages and drawings from all periods of Fullard’s oeuvre.

Post-War British Sculpture and Works on Paper
Linear, craggy forms with earthy textures and patinas defined post-war culture with a freedom that enabled and influenced expectations of art as well as all subsequent sculptural movements. This new freedom is evident in the exploration of fresh techniques and materials and instinctive ‘drawing in space’ made possible by the use of welded metal.
Our exhibition includes work by Kenneth Armitage, Ralph Brown, Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick, Geoffrey Clarke, Elisabeth Frink, George Fullard, John Hoskin, F.E.
Marino Marini: A Sculptor’s Prints

The exhibition includes lithographs and etchings executed between 1952 and 1978, a period of great innovation for Marini, particularly in his growing use of colour to create drama and suspense.
To accompany this impressive group of prints, we are also showing sculptures directly inspired by Marini or relating to his major themes, by Anthony Abrahams, Ralph Brown, Jon Buck, Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick, Terence Coventry, John Hoskin and Bernard Meadows.
Anita Mandl : The Works
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin

We are proud to be celebrating the work of one of our longest-standing gallery artists with this solo exhibition. The show includes sculptures in wood, stone, bronze and silver from all periods of Mandl’s œuvre.
Mandl is first and foremost a carver, working in from the outer limits of a block of ornamental stone or wood to create smooth, rounded and tightly-honed animal forms. The highly polished, seductive surfaces and varied colours of her selected materials make her sculptures irresistibly tactile and joyful to contemplate.
Sculptors Maquettes
Exhibition at Gallery Pangolin
01/10/2018 - 09/11/2018

A model or study for a larger sculpture, a maquette allows an artist to visualise how the final piece might look and to try out approaches and ideas that would not be practical on a bigger scale.
Our exhibition has gathered a collection of maquettes that celebrates this fascinating aspect of sculpture. Some were made as preparatory studies for recognised and much-loved public monuments. Others were made for projects that were ultimately never realised and yet more were purely private studies for potential large works or explore themes central to the artist’s concerns.
Terence Coventry Sculptor
